The final meet of the Class 1A State Series, the State Championship, has come and gone. We have been waiting all season to see who would come out on top in each event. Here is an overview of each event from the ladies side, and each event’s leading swimmers.
200 Medley Relay
Many teams sought to start the meet off with a win in this medley relay, Bolles had finished prelims with almost a 2 second lead to second place. Bolles was able to maintain that lead at finals, winning first state champ title of the night with a 1:43.50. Bolles had set this relay up with four dominant swimmers, all going very close to best times in their relay. Saint Andrews taking second with a 1:44.97, and Pine Crest third with a 1:45.29.
Ladies 200 free was an incredibly fast event this year. Heading into finals Mary Smutny and Nicole Gomez were neck in neck, both breaking 1:50. Smutny, not swimming last high school season, was an unexpected addition to the competition. Smutny dropping 3 seconds from the morning, earned herself the win and crushing the automatic all American time by going 1:46.08. Second place was taken by Gomez with a 1:48.86, and third by Alixandra Roy in the time of 1:50.82.
A very stacked event this year, was the ladies 200 IM. Many leading swimmers were neck in neck for the state title in this event. The top three stayed the same from the morning to at night but were all very close. At night all top three qualified for an automatic All-American. Jennifer Secrest won with a 2:00.62. Going back and forth throughout the race with second place finisher Andrea Santander who finished in the time of 2:01.34. Close behind finished Sasha Ramey in the time of 2:01.60.
Next up was the 50 free, dominantly Chade Nersicio took the win with an impressive 22.66 and an automatic All-American. Second went to McKenna Smith in the time of 23.29, earning herself an All-American as only a sophomore. Third went to Madeline Burt going 23.37.
The girls 100 fly was a stacked event with the top three seeds going into finals all within a second of each other. Secrest, Madeline Burt, and Mary Kelley truly battled it out for the state title. At the 50 they were all very close all going between a 25.5 and a 25.9, with Burt in the lead. Secrest pulled ahead in the last 50 with a 28.48 overall creating a time of 54.10, which earned her the state final. Her senior state championship is shaping up to be a great one.
The 100 free is always an incredibly close race and this year was no different. Out of prelims, your top seed was Adair Sand of Bolles, closely followed by Santander and Smutny. In finals, we saw both Santander and Smutney pull ahead. Santander winning the title with a time of 49.69 and Smutny only a tenth of a second behind winning the second place title. Sand added 0.22 from prelims to finals, bumping her down to third place.
The 500 free final was dominated by Leah DeGeorge from Bolles who dropped almost 5 seconds between prelims and finals, an improvement that earned her the state title. She won with a time of 4:49.78, over three seconds faster than second place. Coming in behind her was Gomez with a time of 4:52.88. Gomez was then followed closely by Lain Shahboz who secured third place with a time of 4:53.38.
200 Free Relay
The 200 free relay is always one of the most interesting events to watch. Each team putting forth their best sprinters in hope of winning the state title and beating their rival schools. Coming out of prelims, it appeared as if it was going to be Pine Crest to win the title, followed by Trinity Prep and Bolles. In finals, we saw Trinity Christian drop almost 3 seconds and pull ahead from fourth place, to first, with a time of 1:34.25 making them the winners of the 200 free relay. Second place we saw Bolles who also dropped from prelims to finals. They earned their spot with a time of 1:34.39. Closely following was Pine Crest, with a time of 1:34.83.
The girls 100 Back was interesting to watch. In Prelims, Mary Kate Kelly took the top seed with a 55.30. Finishing close behind her was Sand and Shahboz. Though at finals, Shahboz took first place with a 54.95. Behind her was Anna Freed who earned second with a 55.42 and third place was Kelley with an overall time of 55.45.
Girls 100 breast top three stayed the same from prelims to finals. Shayna Fetes, reigning champ in this event, took first again with the time of 1:03.07. Jenessa Schwarz finishing close behind, as only a junior in a 1:03.62. And Carly Schwab in third with a 1:04.49.
400 Free Relay
The 400 free Relay was one of the most interesting events of the night. At Prelims Pinecrest Girls qualified first, second was Trinity Christian, and third Bolles. Though at Finals, Bolles outswam the Pinecrest girls and won with a 3:25.14, in second was the Pinecrest girls with a 3:26.75 and third Trinity Christian with a 3:27.44.
Overall Team Scores
Bolles girls, captured their 28th consecutive state title. For the girls overall, Bolles won scoring 381 points. Second place, close behind went to Pine Crest with 303 points. Third place won by Saint Andrews with 244 points.
