Notable Florida Athletes

Women’s 50 Butterfly | Alia Atkinson

After last nights incredible silver medal swim by Alia in the 50m Breaststroke, she had to regroup both mentally and physically to continue her commonwealth campaign. Following her prelim swim of the 50 fly, she stated “Last night I got a bit excited and completely forgot my stroke, so I really need to focus tonight. I’m still feeling fresh and my main goal, for now, is just to make the final.” She took care of that claim tonight by posting a 26.84 earning her a spot in the final tomorrow night. She will compete against the worlds best including Madeline Groves and Cate Campbell, who both posted mid-25s in tonight’s semis.

Men’s 100 Freestyle | Dylan Carter

Yesterday we wrote about how Dylan Carter took a new step into being an international threat. After winning the silver on night 2 in the 50 butterfly, he returned to prelims swimming the 100 freestyle against a stacked field of Olympic medalists, World champions, and record holders. Qualifying third, Carter swam one lane over from the current champion, Kyle Chalmers. Carter swam his own race, finishing fourth in the heat, and landing himself in the star-studded final for tomorrow night. Carter swam a 49.06 in tonight’s semifinal, compared to his prelims swim of 48.96

On how tonight felt:

“Way more painful. I think its just the end of my work right now with NCAAs and this. Emotionally after last night, I am done.”

How Day 2 felt after last nights Silver in the 50 Butterfly:

“Prelims was…I didn’t sleep much last night, between prelims and finals and now I just need some rest. I’m scratching the fly so I can get some rest for tomorrows final.”
