CHARLOTTE, N.C. – For the fifth time this season, the FGCU swimming and diving team swept the CCSA weekly awards as Katie Armitage was named the Women’s Swimmer of the Week and Ashley Wright was named the Women’s Diver of the Week following their performances inSaturday’s quad meet, league officials announced Tuesday afternoon.
“Once again, I’m excited for the girls to gain the recognition they deserve,” said FGCU head coach Neal Studd. “They both work extremely hard, and it’s good to see them get the results.”
Armitage (Bushey, United Kingdom/Queens School Bushey), who earned the award for the second time this season, turned in season-best performances in three events last weekend as she won both the 100-yard and 200-yard breaststrokes in times of 1:01.27 and 2:14.90, respectively. En route to her 11th and 12th individual wins of the season, she turned in NCAA ‘B’ cut times for the fourth time this season. Armitage, who already holds the school record in the pair of events, continues to rewrite the FGCU record books as she registered the second- and third-fastest times in program history on Saturday. Additionally, the sophomore standout finished second in the 100-yard IM after touching the pads in 57.42 seconds. Not only was her time in the IM good for a season-best performance, but it also edged the FGCU program record by 0.05 seconds in the recently-recognized event.
In the relay events, the United Kingdom native teamed up with Katie Latham (Deal, Kent, United Kingdom/Sir Roger Manwood’s School), Sara Hamilton (Stonehaven, Scotland/Mackie Academy) and Elise Haan (Naples, Fla./Gulf Coast HS) to win the 400-yard freestyle in a time of 3:23.84, the team’s second best this season. Armitage swam a 100-yard split of 50.40 seconds, which the second fastest of the event behind Haan.
Wright (Port Saint Lucie, Fla./Indian River/Lincoln Park Academy) earned the Diver of the Week award for the fifth time this season after turning in a personal-best performance off the one-meter board and finishing first off the three-meter board versus No. 17 N.C. State. Her mark of 280.20 in the low dive competition was good for a second-place finish and registers as the third-best score in FGCU history. Additionally, her score of 274.20 in the high dive competition was just shy of her season-best performance at Florida State and ranks as the eighth-best dive in program history. The Port Saint Lucie native continues make her mark on FGCU’s all-time record list as she now holds five total top-10 scores in the one-meter and three-meter dives in only her first season with the Green and Blue.
