Florida State swimming and diving sophomore Griffin Alaniz was named the ACC Male Swimmer of the Week on Tuesday by the league office for his performance at the Auburn Invite this past weekend.
“We are very excited for Griffin,” FSU head coach Neal Studd said. “He has outstanding talent and he had a great weekend.”
Alaniz joins junior Kanoa Kaleoaloha (Sept.26) and senior Chad Mylin (Jan.9) as ACC Male Swimmer of the Week honorees this season.
The Rockville, Md., native competed in the 500 free, 400 IM and 200 back at the Auburn Invite from Feb. 2-4. On Friday, Alaniz clocked a time of 4:26.31 in the 500 free before turning in a personal best of 3:49.68 in the 400 IM for second place on Saturday. His mark keeps him in fifth place on FSU’s all-time top 10 list.
Alaniz was just off his best time in the 200 back, winning with a time of 1:43.37, over one second ahead of the rest of the field. His prelim time of 1:43.29 ranks him seventh in the ACC this season.
The Seminoles will head to Greensboro, N.C. for the ACC Championships. The women and both diving teams will compete Feb. 14-17 and the men’s swimming will be held Feb.21-24 at the Greensboro Aquatic Center.
